Since I am fairly new to the industry, I thought it would be good to start things from the beginning and share my experiences with RVing.
I grew up in a boating family, so we never got into RVing or even camping for that matter. Since I live in a popular vacation destination, I noticed various RVs here and there, but that was about it. Funny because now that I work in the industry, I see them EVERYWHERE I go. Just a couple weeks ago I was on a bike ride and was passed by a few trucks pulling Keystone Montanas. I got excited and tried to explain to my riding buddy why they are so darn cool. He wasn’t nearly as impressed as I was – I guess you have to check one out for yourself. Anyway, despite my upbringing, I got to experience RVing here and there. My grandpa had one of those super-cool aluminum-bodied Airstreams back in the early eighties that he and grandma would take to Florida every winter. My uncle had a pusher-style motorhome for a few years too. I never recall it leaving their yard, but it turned out to be a popular hangout for my cousins and I. Growing up I was an avid motocrosser and was somewhat jealous of the other kids that got to travel to the races in their parent’s motorhome. The introduction of the toy hauler seemed to change the game and really took a racer’s pit setup to a whole new level. And then there was a spring break trip in college where a few friends and I based our operations in my buddy’s parent’s 5th wheel at an RV park in Florida for a week. It was a blast, we met a lot of cool people and got a great taste of the Snowbird RV lifestyle. Since I’ve been lucky enough to get a taste of the RV lifestyle and now work in the industry, I am starting to get what it is all about and I get why people are so passionate about RVing. I never imagined I would before, but since becoming immersed in the RV industry, I think I could potentially be an RV owner someday. I am an amateur mountain bike racer and some races require overnight stays from time to time. The opportunity to camp in a comfortable trailer for a weekend race sounds much more appealing than my usual accommodations: truck camping in a Wal-Mart parking lot, mooching friend’s houses and apartments or snagging a friend of a friend’s couch, floor space or whatever else I can dig up for cheap. I think an ultra-lite trailer like the Wildwood Xlite 14FD Travel Trailer from Forest River would fit my needs pretty well.
So how do you go from standing on the sidelines to owning a trailer and living the RV life? Aside from talking to the friendly staff at Lakeshore-RV or visiting their impressive showroom for yourself, you can tune into my next post to find out how you can get your adventure started.
