Baseball & Camping in Detroit: Tale of Two Worlds

Since my recent reintroduction to RV camping, I’ve eagerly looked for opportunities to get out and camp again. My boyfriend and I had purchased Detroit Tigers tickets months ago with the idea that we would stay in a hotel near Comerica Park. Had we owned an RV, it is safe to say we would have gone that route instead.  I wondered how many RV parks were in the Detroit Metro area and out of curiosity I turned to my trusty copy of Woodall’s North American Campground Directory and found Detroit Greenfield RV Park in Ypsilanti Michigan, only 33 miles from Comerica Park.

Detroit Greenfield RV Park sparked my interest and I immediately turned to my computer to see what they had to offer. I was delighted to see that it sits in a scenic and forest-like setting complete with a private spring-fed lake that looked to have good Bass, Bluegill and Walleye fishing, perfect for an aspiring angler like me! The campsites appear to be shaded, come with hookups, picnic tables and fire rings in addition to access to clean restrooms, outdoor dish-washing facility, recreation areas and of course, beach for swimming and a 90 foot water slide at the lakeside. Had my boyfriend and I gone the camping route, I think Detroit Greenfield RV Park would have been a nice getaway and a great way to enhance our weekend.  The idyllic setting of Detroit Greenfield RV Park looked to be the kind of place where relaxation and family time come easy, fish can be caught, friendships can be created and renewed, stories can be shared and best of all, it’s just the kind of place where you don’t have to travel far to enjoy the Michigan outdoors.

From Detroit Greenfield RV Park, it’s only about 33 miles to Comerica Park – just a quick drive East on I-94 and Michigan Avenue. If a baseball game isn’t quite your thing, why not check out the Henry Ford Museum which is even closer at 23 miles away?

Upon my arrival at Comerica Park, the difference between your typical campground or my camping experience over 4th of July weekend and the stadium in the middle of downtown Detroit was night and day.  In the span of just a few weeks, I had been in two very different worlds. The calm and stillness of camping and all the hustle and bustle of the baseball game are such complete opposites.  As I entered the stadium, I saw men, women, children, couples, friends and families, head to toe in Tiger apparel.  I stopped for a moment and looked at all the Navy and Orange that surrounded me, everyone excited to experience the thrill of the game.  I thought of the two very different worlds I gotten to experience over the last few weeks and how different today was compared to my 4th of July camping weekend.  As the Tigers threw their first pitch and the game began, I realized that the outdoors really is my favorite place to be.  With the sun beating down upon your face, surrounded by family and friends, how can one not want to enjoy everything the outdoors has to offer?

Until next time, this is SJ from Lakeshore RV, signing off.

21 rows up
Near the dugout
Batter up
I heard him shout!

The game began
The batter swung
A line drive-
Inge ran
Minnesota’s heads low were hung

Next up to bat was Ordonez ready
Bases loaded, game hot and heavy
He swung his bat, to first he ran!
This is when the game began
She shouted, “Hit a home run for your biggest fan!”
For in the crowd she was, that fan
On this warm summer day
Dreaming of camping just a short throw away
